A few days ago an article appeared on Yahoo about whether to use soap or not. The article was totally misleading as it insisted that Syndet or the so called Neutral soaps and Glycerin Soaps were good for our skin and so were the face washes and body washes.
I make natural soap at home. The only chemical used is lye and that too is used to change the oils to soap. My face has never looked better. Its never stretchy and dry. Infact it has a soft feel after i shower. Commercial soaps and syndets are the ones that dry your skin. Infact they are suitable only to wash laundry and your toilet. The body washes are a cancerous concoction of chemicals. Most of these chemicals cause hormonal and other systemic problems in people especially young children.
Commercial soaps are made by a process called Hot process which allows the soap to be sold almost immediately after it sets hard (in a day or two). This is the reason why all commercial soaps are highly alkaline . This alkaliniity is what strips the skin of its natural oils causing it to dry out and become stretchy and scaly. Whereas a natural handmade soap is made using the Cold process which retains all the glycerine. And this soap is cured for about a month before its made available for use.
The skin itself has no PH. Ph is a method of measuring potential hydrogen or alkalinity of liquids not solids. Therefore when someone says that the skin is naturally acidic, he is actually measuring the alkalinity of the the various natural skin oils, sweat and the residue on the skin due to natural bacterial activity(The acid mantle). All this tends to make the skin slightly acidic.
A commercially manufactured soap has an average alkalinity of 10.5. This is worsened by the removal of the Natural Glycerine, which is a by product of soapmaking. The glycerine is then sold seperately to companies manufacturing lotions etc. Its an irony that we have to buy lotions made of the same glycerine that was removed from the soap, to moisturize our skin to counteract the drying effect of that very soap. A Natural soap without the addition of extra chemicals has an alkalinity of around 8 to 10. This level of alkalinity usually doesnt cause harm to the skin. Infact the skin assumes its natural acidic nature (acid mantle) soon after a bath. A soap too acidic or too alkaline can cause harm to the skin.
It is unfortunate that hospitals follow a regimen of scrubbing newborn infants with baby body washes (they say its as mild as pure water!! ). The fact that we apply commercial lotions and baby washes on baby skin is totally crazy. Babies do not need synthetic detergent based body washes to clean their tender skin. Neither does it require artificial petroleum based moisturizers. Clean water and maybe a few drops of rose water for fragrance is more than enough. Squeaky clean is for dishes not human skin.
Basically its not soap but the kind of soap you use that really matters. The synthetic detergents and all artificial colours and fragrances are the main culprits leading to all kinds of skin problems like acne, eczema and pigmentation. Soaps which are handmade by the cold process method and which only contain natural essential oils are according to my opinion better for the skin. Thats my experience after making and using handmade soaps myself.
All body washes first strip the natural oils from your skin then it coats the skin with petroleum based moisturizers and silicones present in the same body wash. So you feel as if the body wash is indeed mild. Its all actually a CHEMICAL ILLUSION !!! Shampoos are advertised and claim to cure hair problems that they themselves cause. WHAT AN IRONY!!!! Detergents in shampoos CAUSE hairfall in the first place.
By the way have you ever gotten a prescription by a doctor which say "safe no side-effects"?

Bye Bye Eczema!
Having a child in the house suffering from Eczema is really one BIG heartache. Its so difficult to manage it in infants and very young children that its next to impossible due to the constant scratching involved. My baby boy has been suffering from Atopy since he was 10 days old and corticosteroids seemed to be the first and last line of treatment available in Modern allopathic medicine. Like most mothers i too did my homework on the harmful side-effects of steriods. In the meantime my son continued to suffer from itchy, bloody, eczematous lesions all over his tender cheeks as i was too nervous applying the cream to his skin. I was badly criticised by family and friends for not treating him with the steroid creams. Everyone scornfully considered me "Extra Smart".
Thats when i turned to my family homeopath. He had been treating me and my older daughter for minor ailments and i really hoped he could work a miracle with my son too. His words were always reassuring although he didnt claim to cure my baby instantly. "Thats what steroids do" he said,
They just supress the symptoms, not treat the disease. Supressing the disease is always a prelude to more dangerous allergy related disorders like Asthma, hayfever and other chronic respiratory disorders. The only one or two times that i have applied a steroid cream on my sons face, has resulted in clear skin instantly but the symptoms returned with a vengeance.
Today my son is 1year old and although his skin is not perfect yet he has outgrown his miserable state with the help of Homeopathy. There are a few other things i would like to share with mother's who are desperately seeking a cure for baby's eczema.
Give your Little one lots of Pure Water to drink several times a day.
This habit will ensure that all toxins in his or her little body are flushed out. Be sure YOU drink a lot of water too if you are breast-feeding your baby. You are not aware of how many toxic substances you pass down to your baby through your breastmilk. Even If you are exclusively breasfeeding your Infant, make sure you give her a few teaspoons of water each day.
Do not stop Breast-feeding.
There are a lot of Physicians out there who insist that the baby is allergic to breast milk and hence the baby is better off without it. Eczema is a disorder directly related to the autoimmune system and what can be better than an imune boosting natural tonic than breastmilk. As long as a mother avoids foods that cause agravation of eczema symptoms in the baby there is no way a baby can become allergic to mother's milk.
Cut out the Eggs and Chicken from your childs diet.
I have learnt through a lot of trial and error that Eggs and chicken meat are major culprits in eczema. Avoid eggs altogether until the acute stage passes off and try introducing it again. If the skin breaks up you can ban eggs from your childs diet and also from yours as long as you breastfeed.
Throw out all Commercial Disposable Diapers.
If you havent noticed yet. A diaper is one UNNATURAL daily item a baby always has on his skin 24/7, So you can imagine the amount of chemical crap we as mothers are exposing out little ones genitals and skin to. Most of us dont even know what goes into making all those convenient plastic diapers out there. My son's symptoms subsided immediately after i stopped using diapers. I use only cotton cloth diapers now. Trust me it really works and its really worth the trouble changing and washing diapers.
Add some Extra virgin olive oil to his warm bath water.
Dry sensitive skin really needs some moisturizing everyday. And what else could be better than Olive oil. Add about 2 tablespoons to his bath water and watch the difference in the texture of his skin immediately. Olive oil has amazing healing and moisturizing qualities. Do NOT use any chemical laden creams available on the market. They are just a concoction of cancerous chemicals at best. Do not use those petrolatum based moisturing creams youself either.
Do not keep you child in sterile living conditions.
Let him develop his immunity to all harmful micro-organisms. The better equipped his immune system, the better are his chances of overcoming eczema. Throw out all your hand-sanitisers and antibacterial soaps and floor disinfectants.
Use Natural Olive oil based Handmade soaps on your baby at all times.
It is very very important that you use 100% natural mild olive oil soaps for your baby , and not commercially made baby soaps. Even the one your Pediatrician has recommended. All of them contain synthetic detergents, skin irritating artificial moisturisers, synthetic colours and fragrances. Do not use synthetic detergents even to wash your baby's clothes as most leave residues on the garments washed. Instead wash your babys clothes with a few reetha pods(in a thin muslin bag) thown in the washing machine. Add in a few drops of natural Essential oils of your choice for fragrance. Your clothes will come out squeaky clean minus the harmful detergent residue.
Drink organic cows milk if you can get it. Keep your atopic baby away from commercially packed cows milk as long as possible. Cut down on pasteurised packaged milk yourself if you are breast feeding. You never know what the cows are being fed and being injected with.
Keep your little bundle of joy safe and healthy. After all a mother has immense control on her baby's day to days activities. YOU can change your childs life for the best.

Loose Weight The Smart Way.
How many times have you been asked this qestion? "Hey buddy, How have you put on so much weight? And you've always answered,"I really dont know the answer to that, since i eat so little"!!
Well most overweight people are always under the impression that they eat very little. They may be honest about that to some extent. Actually there are three types of weight gainers, The Heavy-Eaters, The Wrong Food Eaters and the Combination of the two Eaters. There are so many wrong things a typical weight gainer does each and everyday of his life that it all adds up to disastrous effects over time.
Let me tell you about those small yet, NO, NO things in a weight gainers life and the small simple things that you can do to change the whole picture around.
You love Restaurants and Fast foods.
I am hundred percent sure about that. You love your Butter Chicken and Hamburgers. But trust me this one is the most import issue with you. You just cant control your tongue. But you have to if you're going to loose some weight. Cut the fast food crap out of your diet. Or maybe Indulge once a month, NOT once every week! Also cut down on your favorite packed Chips and Namkeens. I'd rather not mention any brands here, but most are packed with MSG(your best obesity booster) and hydrogented oils used over and over again, which are so degraded u cant even make bio-diesel out of it. How do you think YOUR system is going to digest that. Eat a lot of fruits and veggies to fill you up in between meals. Rice is NOT fattening, unless u mix it up with ur favorite butter chicken and oily fatty gravies. Dont starve your self at dinner, only to wake up in the middle of the night and chomp on that big fat piece of leftover Lamb roast in the freezer. Eat a healthy quantity of complex carbohydrates to keep you asleep all through the night without the hunger pangs. Do yourself a favour and let your wife or mother cook your favorite meals at home. Minus the fatty and fried stuff!
You are a COUCH Potato!
I know you just love your cricket matches and your saas-bahu serials. But its time to get your bum out of your soft cosy sofa and take the stairs down to your garden or childrens park. Play with your kids. They'll love you for sharing quality time with them. As a bonus you'll burn more calories running around with your kids, than running on the expensive treadmill in your airconditioned expensive gym. Forget your apartment building even has an elevator.
You are Sleep-deprieved.
You have to complete you office work before the deadline so you work till late hours at night. Or maybe you have to watch your "Very important" Cricket match. Its so important to be update with your cricket scores right? Not anymore. Go get a good night's sleep for atleast seven to eight hours each night. Your body will thank you for that. Sleep deprivation results in hormonal imbalances in your body which disturbs everthing including your eating pattern apart from making you cranky and depressed over time. But dont Oversleep!
You have unresolved marital, family or work-related issues.
Everybody has problems in life!
Get over your breakups. Trust me you wont even remember your ex-lover after you've meet your next one. Most people tend to binge when they are depressed or stressed-out. You also dont loose weight when you are mentally disturbed. So the faster you are emotionally free , the better. Resolve your marital issues with your spouse. Talk about things which trouble you both and find a common solution for your problems to restore peace in the house for your sake and the sake of your kids too. And if at all she says she loves someone else, Let Her Go!
